Minnesota R&D Tax Credit Program

Companies that engage in certain research and development (R&D) activities in Minnesota may qualify for the Credit for Increasing Research Activities.

The R&D credit is equal to 10 percent of qualifying expenses up to $2 million, and 2.5 percent for expenses above that level. Qualifying expenses are the same as for the federal R&D credit – defined in Section 41 of the Internal Revenue Code – but must be for research done in Minnesota.

Examples include R&D-related wages, supplies and research contracted outside your business. Contributions to qualified nonprofit organizations that make grants to early-stage technology businesses in Minnesota also may qualify.

Innovation Voucher Pilot Program

This pilot program provides up to $25,000 in financing to help small businesses purchase technical assistance and services necessary to advance research, development or commercialization of new or innovative products and services.

Qualifying companies receive vouchers, which can be redeemed with approved public universities, colleges, technical schools and nonprofits in Minnesota.

TrackIf Intelligent Alerting Platform for Retail

TrackIf is pioneering a new way for retailers and their vendors to market to shoppers. The technology simply ‘asks’ shoppers to set their criteria and give their permission for marketing communications sent to them. This Intelligent Alerting platforms lets shoppers request emails for product price drops, back-in-stock, new items added by brand and other product changes. With most e-commerce sites converting about 2% of product page viewers, retailers traditionally have retargeted the 98% who don’t buy with irritating emails and ads to try to bring the shopper back. TrackIf’s white label “shopper-requested” alerts convert at 2.5 to 10 times better than traditional marketing content. The company recently raised a $5M Series A venture capital round, and has customers including the largest e-commerce companies in Minnesota and other large retailers nationwide.

MN Angel Tax Credit Program

Minnesota’s Angel Tax Credit provides a 25-percent credit to investors or investment funds that put money into startup companies focused on high technology, new proprietary technology, or a new proprietary product, process or service in specified fields. The maximum credit is $125,000 per person, per year ($250,000 if filing jointly). The credit is refundable. Residents of other states and foreign countries are eligible.

Innovators & Entrepreneurs of MSP Meetup

A free informal weekly gathering for discussion and networking of business leaders, professionals, students, scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs.  1,900 members and about twenty attend a typical meeting.

Innovations and the creative process in products, business models and science are subjects of conversation. Sometimes there is a discussion topic, others a featured guest.  One session a month is over dinner at a local restaurant limited to six.

The goals are to connect innovators and entrepreneurs so we can learn from each other, make the journey more fun, and to support each others success.  Software, electronics, life sciences, med tech, services, products, materials, designs–innovators of a wide variety of value propositions participate. Both for-profit and non-profit entrepreneurs participate. Many are starting their second or third business. A partner in McKinsey & Company (NYC) turned up one evening. We have enjoyed meeting people from China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Italy, India, Bangladesh and other countries. Many are newcomers to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Multi-generational, our age range has been 20 to 70+. Several investors make periodic visits for those of you looking for capital.

MinneDemo is for real, working technology products made in Minnesota. Demos are 7 minutes long and PowerPoint IS NOT ALLOWED. Some have described it as geek show and tell.
